About United Parcel Service (UPS)
UPS (United Parcel Service) is a private, publicly traded logistics company founded in 1907 in Seattle and now headquartered in Atlanta. Recognizable by its brown trucks and uniforms—the reason it's nicknamed "Brown"—UPS operates one of the world's largest integrated air and ground networks, including its Worldport hub in Louisville, Kentucky. In the US it is a dominant force in business-to-business and e-commerce parcel delivery, prized for consistent transit times and detailed tracking. Unlike USPS, UPS controls its own last-mile fleet for most shipments rather than handing packages off. It also runs The UPS Store franchises and UPS My Choice for delivery management. On PackageTrackNow, an independent tracking aggregator with no affiliation to UPS, you can monitor a UPS shipment's progress alongside parcels from other carriers in one place.
UPS Services & Delivery Times
UPS domestic service is organized mainly by guaranteed delivery speed:
- UPS Ground — the workhorse, typically 1–5 business days depending on distance, with a day-definite estimate.
- UPS 3 Day Select — delivery within three business days.
- UPS 2nd Day Air — second business day, with an A.M. variant for early delivery.
- UPS Next Day Air — next business day, offered in Early, standard, and Saver windows.
International tiers include UPS Worldwide Express, Worldwide Expedited, and Worldwide Saver. Most air services carry a money-back guarantee on the committed time. UPS SurePost hands lighter, less-urgent packages to USPS for final delivery, which can add a day. Saturday and, in select markets, Sunday residential delivery is available on Ground and Home shipments at no extra charge.
UPS Tracking Number Format
The classic UPS tracking number begins with 1Z and is 18 characters long: 1Z, a six-character shipper account number, a two-digit service code, and an eight-character package identifier—for example 1Z999AA10123456784. The final digit is a check character, so a mistyped number often fails validation. Find it in your shipment confirmation email, on the label near the barcode, or in your UPS My Choice dashboard. Not every UPS package uses 1Z: freight and Mail Innovations shipments can appear as a longer numeric string or a USPS-style number. Enter the code without spaces on PackageTrackNow and it will normalize the format for you.
UPS Delivery Schedule
UPS Ground and Air services deliver Monday through Friday, with Saturday and even Sunday delivery available in many areas (Saturday Ground delivery has expanded to cover most of the US). Residential deliveries typically arrive by end of day; there is no guaranteed morning window unless you use a timed Air service such as Next Day Air Early. UPS does not deliver on major US holidays.
Tips for Tracking UPS
- Enroll in free UPS My Choice to see estimated delivery windows, redirect packages to a UPS Access Point, or authorize where a driver leaves them.
- If tracking shows SurePost, the last mile is handled by USPS—expect a final USPS scan and possible extra day.
- A "Delivery Change" or "Exception" status usually means an address issue; correct it quickly to avoid return-to-sender.
- UPS transit estimates are business days and exclude weekends and holidays.
- Signature-required parcels can be routed to a nearby UPS Store or Access Point locker for pickup.
- Reused 1Z numbers can occasionally surface an older shipment—verify the origin and ship date match your order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common UPS tracking inquiries.
Your UPS tracking number appears in the shipping confirmation email from the retailer, on your receipt if you shipped in person, and in your order history on most e-commerce sites. It is usually labelled "tracking number", "tracking ID", or "consignment number".
UPS only records an update when the parcel is physically scanned. On long legs between facilities — or over weekends and holidays — a parcel can travel for a day or two without any new scan appearing. This is normal and does not mean the parcel is lost.
It means the parcel has left one UPS facility and is on a vehicle or aircraft heading to the next one. It is the most common status in any parcel's life and requires no action from you.
Check every entrance, your mailbox, and any parcel locker or safe place you have on file with UPS. Ask household members and immediate neighbors. If it has not appeared after 24 hours, contact UPS to open an investigation and let the sender know.
