About Canada Post Corporation

Canada Post (Postes Canada) is Canada's national postal operator, a federal Crown corporation responsible for universal mail and parcel delivery across the country's vast geography, from dense cities to remote northern communities. For US recipients, Canada Post is the carrier behind many packages sent by Canadian retailers, cross-border marketplace sellers, and individuals. Its US-bound parcels move through Canada Post's international gateway and are transferred to the United States Postal Service for final delivery, thanks to the longstanding postal partnership between the two national carriers. Canada Post also owns Purolator, a courier used for faster commercial shipping. Bilingual labeling in English and French is a giveaway that a parcel originated with Canada Post. PackageTrackNow is an independent tracking aggregator, not affiliated with Canada Post, and is handy for watching a shipment cross the border and change hands to USPS.

Canada Post Services & Delivery Times

Canada Post's US-bound ("USA") services are graded by speed and guarantee:

  • Tracked Packet – USA — economical small-parcel service with full tracking, generally 4–7 business days.
  • Expedited Parcel – USA — a cost-effective ground option for larger items, roughly 4–7 business days.
  • Xpresspost – USA — faster delivery, often 2–3 business days to major centers with a delivery estimate.
  • Priority Worldwide – USA — the premium air-express tier for time-sensitive shipments, with the tightest committed windows.

Small letters and documents can go by International Letter-post. Xpresspost and Priority Worldwide carry on-time delivery guarantees, while Tracked Packet and Expedited trade speed for a lower price. Delivery estimates are business days and exclude the time a parcel spends in US customs, which can add a day or more.

Canada Post Tracking Number Format

Canada Post domestic and many parcel tracking numbers—called a PIN—are 16 digits, often shown in four groups such as 1234 5678 9012 3456. International items instead use the UPU S10 format: two letters, nine digits, and the country code CA, for example LN123456789CA or an Xpresspost EE/ER prefix. Find the number on your shipping receipt, the label barcode, or the seller's dispatch notice. If your code ends in CA, it's the international format bound for US customs; a 16-digit numeric string is the domestic-style PIN. Enter the full number without spaces so PackageTrackNow can follow it through Canada Post and the USPS handoff on the American side.

Canada Post Delivery Schedule

Within Canada, Canada Post delivers Monday through Friday. For shipments to the US, Canada Post hands the parcel to USPS at the border for final delivery, so the last leg follows the USPS Monday–Saturday schedule. Tracked Packet and Expedited Parcel USA are scanned at handoff and on US arrival; customs clearance can add a day or two.

Tips for Tracking Canada Post

  • US delivery is completed by USPS, so once the parcel clears the border, look for USPS scans and sometimes a separate USPS number to appear.
  • Expect a customs stage at the border; scans may pause briefly while US CBP processes the shipment.
  • Only tracked services (Tracked Packet, Xpresspost, Expedited) update to delivery—basic letter-post shows little detail.
  • Estimates are business days and don't count weekends, Canadian statutory holidays, or US postal holidays.
  • Winter weather across Canada's network can delay origin processing during peak season.
  • If a parcel goes missing past the estimate, the Canadian sender files the trace or claim, since their shipping contract is with Canada Post.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common Canada Post tracking inquiries.

Your Canada Post tracking number appears in the shipping confirmation email from the retailer, on your receipt if you shipped in person, and in your order history on most e-commerce sites. It is usually labelled "tracking number", "tracking ID", or "consignment number".

Canada Post only records an update when the parcel is physically scanned. On long legs between facilities — or over weekends and holidays — a parcel can travel for a day or two without any new scan appearing. This is normal and does not mean the parcel is lost.

It means the parcel has left one Canada Post facility and is on a vehicle or aircraft heading to the next one. It is the most common status in any parcel's life and requires no action from you.

Check every entrance, your mailbox, and any parcel locker or safe place you have on file with Canada Post. Ask household members and immediate neighbors. If it has not appeared after 24 hours, contact Canada Post to open an investigation and let the sender know.
