About PostNL

PostNL is the national postal and parcel company of the Netherlands, tracing its roots to the former state post and once known as TNT Post and TPG Post. Today it handles the bulk of letter mail and a large share of parcels delivered to Dutch homes and businesses, and it also carries cross-border volume to and from Belgium and the rest of Europe. PostNL runs a dense network of collection points and parcel lockers hosted in supermarkets, tobacconists, and other shops, giving recipients flexible pickup and drop-off options. For Dutch online shoppers, PostNL is one of the most common carriers on an incoming order. PackageTrackNow is an independent tracking aggregator, not affiliated with PostNL, that consolidates PostNL scans so you can follow a shipment in one place.

PostNL Services & Delivery Times

PostNL's consumer and business services include:

  • Parcel delivery — standard home delivery within the Netherlands, usually next business day for domestic orders placed on time.
  • Pickup points and lockers — delivery to a nearby PostNL point or automated locker for collection at your convenience.
  • Mailbox parcels — small items sized to fit through a letterbox, so no signature is needed.
  • Evening and Sunday delivery — available in parts of the country for eligible parcels.
  • International — cross-border parcels and mail, plus registered options for tracked, signed delivery.
  • Returns — drop-off at PostNL points with a prepaid label.

Exact delivery speed and available options depend on the sender's chosen service and your location.

PostNL Tracking Number Format

Domestic PostNL parcels use a barcode that commonly begins with 3S followed by letters and digits — for example 3SABCD1234567. International registered items instead use the 13-character S10 format: two letters, nine digits, and the country code NL, such as RR123456785NL. When tracking, PostNL often asks for the destination postal code alongside the barcode, especially for domestic parcels. You will find the number in the retailer's shipping confirmation, in the PostNL notification email or app message, or on the label. Enter it without spaces; if a domestic code will not resolve, check that you have also supplied the correct postal code.

PostNL Delivery Schedule

PostNL delivers parcels Monday through Saturday, with evening and even Sunday delivery available for eligible items in parts of the Netherlands. Letter mail follows a separate, less frequent schedule. If no one is home for a parcel that needs a signature, PostNL typically leaves it with a neighbor or at a nearby pickup point and posts a note, or offers redelivery. Recipients can use PostNL notifications to steer a parcel to a locker or collection point before it arrives. Cross-border parcels take longer than domestic ones and depend on the partner carrier in the destination country.

Tips for Tracking PostNL

  • Keep the destination postal code handy — PostNL frequently requires it together with the barcode for domestic parcels.
  • Small mailbox parcels may be delivered without a knock, so check your letterbox before assuming a delay.
  • Use the PostNL notification to redirect a parcel to a pickup point or a neighbor if you will be out.
  • Evening and Sunday delivery exist only in some regions, so not every parcel qualifies.
  • International items switch to the S10 barcode, and the PostNL history may end once the parcel leaves the Netherlands and continues under the destination country's carrier.
